Description

The Fermion VL6180X breakout module integrates STMicroelectronics’ patented FlightSense™ technology, which measures the time-of-flight of a reflected 940nm infrared light pulse to determine distance. This method provides high accuracy independent of the target’s color or reflectance, making it superior to traditional IR proximity sensors. The module includes signal conditioning and level shifting for easy integration with 3.3V or 5V microcontroller systems.

In addition to precise ranging, the sensor features an on-chip ambient light sensor (ALS) capable of measuring light intensity in lux. The compact breakout board provides a convenient 0.1″ pitch header for I2C communication and power, simplifying prototyping and integration into robotics, automation, and IoT projects requiring reliable short-range object detection.

Key Features

  • FlightSense™ Time-of-Flight technology for reflectance-independent distance measurement.
  • Dual-function sensor providing both proximity (0-100mm) and ambient light level data.
  • 940nm invisible VCSEL laser emitter with strong ambient light immunity.
  • Low power operation with less than 5mA current consumption.
  • Wide operating voltage range from 3.3V to 5V DC for flexible system integration.
  • Compact Fermion-series breakout with pre-populated headers for rapid prototyping.
  • I2C digital output for simple daisy-chaining and communication with host MCUs.
  • Extended operating temperature range from -25°C to +85°C.

Applications

  • Robotics obstacle avoidance and cliff detection for small mobile platforms.
  • Touchless gesture sensing and proximity detection in consumer electronics interfaces.
  • Object presence detection and material handling in compact automation systems.
  • Lidar-assisted focusing and paper detection in printer and copier mechanisms.
  • Ambient light-adaptive display backlight control in portable devices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the VL6180X and a standard IR proximity sensor?

The VL6180X uses Time-of-Flight (ToF) technology, measuring the round-trip time of a light pulse for distance calculation. This makes its reading independent of the target's color and reflectance, unlike analog IR sensors whose output varies with surface reflectivity. It provides direct millimeter readings via I2C with much higher accuracy and consistency.

What is the required wiring and I2C address for this breakout?

Connect the breakout's VCC pin to 3.3V or 5V, GND to ground, SDA to your microcontroller's I2C data line, and SCL to the I2C clock line. The default I2C address of the VL6180X is 0x29. No pull-up resistors are required on the breakout as they are included on-board.

Can the sensor measure distances beyond 100mm?

The specified reliable ranging distance is 5mm to 100mm. Under optimal conditions (high reflectance target, low ambient IR), it may report distances up to 200mm, but readings beyond 100mm are not guaranteed to be accurate or stable. For consistent long-range detection, consider a sensor like the VL53L0X.

Does the integrated ambient light sensor require separate configuration?

Yes, the ambient light sensing (ALS) function is separate from the proximity engine. Both functions share the same I2C interface but have distinct register sets. You must configure the ALS gain and integration time registers to obtain meaningful lux readings, following the sequence outlined in the VL6180X application notes.
