Description

The DFRobot Gravity Gesture and Touch Sensor integrates an infrared proximity sensing array and a capacitive touch panel into a single module. The proximity system uses modulated IR signals to detect hand movements and gestures within an adjustable 0 to 30 cm range, while the capacitive touchpad senses direct contact on five independent zones. Onboard processing handles the gesture recognition algorithm, outputting simple serial commands to reduce host microcontroller load.

Designed for 3.3V to 5V logic systems, the module features a power-saving auto-sleep function, waking upon detected proximity or touch. Its robust construction and standardized Gravity connector interface ensure reliable performance in interactive installations, smart home controls, and educational robotics applications.

Key Features

  • Integrated gesture recognition and multi-touch sensing in a compact module.
  • Adjustable infrared proximity detection range up to 30 centimeters.
  • Low-power architecture with auto-sleep and wake-on-motion/touch functionality.
  • Standardized Gravity 3-pin interface (VCC, GND, TX/RX) for plug-and-play connectivity.
  • Pre-loaded gesture algorithm simplifies development for Arduino and Raspberry Pi platforms.
  • Durable PCB construction with a protective outer shield for extended project life.
  • UART serial protocol enables straightforward integration with most microcontrollers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for this gesture and touch sensor?

The module operates from 3.3V to 5V DC, making it directly compatible with most Arduino boards, Raspberry Pi GPIO (using logic level shifting if necessary), ESP32, and other common 3.3V or 5V microcontroller systems without requiring an external voltage regulator.

How do I communicate with the sensor, and what data does it output?

Communication is via a simple UART (serial) interface. The module transmits pre-processed command codes corresponding to detected gestures (like 'left swipe' or 'pull down') or touchpad activations over its TX pin. You connect this to your microcontroller's RX pin and read the serial data stream, eliminating the need for complex signal processing code on the host.

Can the detection range for gestures be adjusted?

Yes, the infrared proximity detection range is software-adjustable up to approximately 30 cm. This allows you to fine-tune the sensor's sensitivity for different application environments, such as reducing the range for a desktop interface or maximizing it for a larger interactive display.

What is the power consumption in active and sleep modes?

During active sensing and processing, the module draws about 56.3 mA. It features an auto-sleep function that reduces current consumption to a mere 40 µA when no gesture or touch activity is detected, making it suitable for battery-powered or energy-conscious projects. It automatically wakes upon sensing proximity or touch.
