Description

The SparkFun MLX90393 Breakout Board integrates Melexis’s MLX90393 monolithic Hall-effect sensor, providing precise Vector Technics measurement of magnetic fields across all three axes. The device utilizes a Triaxis® Hall technology with integrated signal conditioning, ADC, and DSP to deliver stable, low-noise magnetic field data via digital I2C interface.

Operating from 2.2V to 3.6V, this breakout is optimized for 3.3V microcontroller systems and features both a Qwiic connector for plug-and-play I2C connectivity and standard 0.1″-spaced pins for breadboard prototyping. The sensor maintains linear output across its full measurement range, behaving predictably even when saturated by strong nearby magnets.

Key Features

  • Tri-axis magnetic field sensing with 0.161µT/LSB resolution
  • Extended measurement range up to ±44,000µT with saturation handling
  • Ultra-low power consumption of 100µA typical for battery-powered applications
  • Digital I2C interface with 7-bit address 0x0C (0xC0 write)
  • Dual connectivity options: 4-pin Qwiic connector and standard 0.1" header pins
  • Wide operating temperature range from -20°C to 85°C
  • Compact breakout design with onboard voltage regulation and pull-up resistors
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for precision magnetic sensing projects

Applications

  • Electronic compass and heading determination for drones and robotics
  • Non-contact position sensing for linear actuators and rotary encoders
  • Magnetic flow meter integration with impeller sensing
  • Proximity detection and tamper detection in security systems
  • Current sensing via magnetic field measurement around conductors

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the MLX90393 breakout board?

The board operates from 2.2V to 3.6V DC. It is designed for 3.3V logic systems commonly found on microcontrollers like ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and many Arduino-compatible boards. Ensure your power supply stays within this range to prevent damage to the sensor IC.

How do I connect this sensor to my microcontroller?

You have two options: use the 4-pin Qwiic connector for plug-and-play I2C connectivity with other Qwiic devices, or use the standard 0.1" header pins broken out to VCC, GND, SDA, and SCL. Both interfaces provide access to the same I2C bus. Standard I2C pull-up resistors are included on the board.

What is the default I2C address of the MLX90393 sensor?

The default 7-bit I2C address is 0x0C. The 8-bit write address is 0xC0. This address is factory-set and cannot be changed via software, so only one MLX90393 sensor can be used per I2C bus unless an external multiplexer is employed.

Can this sensor detect the polarity and strength of a magnet?

Yes. The MLX90393 measures the magnetic field Vector Technics along all three axes, providing both direction (polarity) and magnitude (strength) data. Its wide dynamic range allows it to measure very small fields (with 0.161µT resolution) while also handling saturation from strong nearby magnets predictably.

Is this sensor suitable for battery-powered projects?

Absolutely. With a typical current consumption of only 100µA, the MLX90393 is highly suitable for low-power and battery-operated applications. You can further optimize power usage by putting the sensor into one of its sleep modes via the I2C command set when measurements are not required.
