Description

This inductive proximity sensor operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction, generating an oscillating field from its face. When a conductive metal object enters this field, it causes a change in oscillation amplitude, triggering the solid-state PNP output switch. The unshielded (non-flush) design allows the magnetic field to extend laterally, providing a larger detection area around the sensor tip, which is advantageous for certain mounting configurations.

Built with an IP67-rated housing, the sensor is protected against dust ingress and temporary immersion in water, making it suitable for harsh industrial environments including machining, material handling, and automated assembly lines. Its wide operating temperature range of -25°C to 70°C ensures stable performance in varied climatic conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between shielded (flush) and unshielded (non-flush) mounting for this sensor?

Unshielded (non-flush) sensors, like this RM18 model, allow the sensing electromagnetic field to extend from the face and sides of the barrel. This permits detection of metal objects approaching from the side and allows the sensor to be mounted flush with or even protruding from a metal mounting surface without affecting its sensing field or range.

What types of metals can this inductive sensor detect?

Inductive proximity sensors are primarily designed to detect ferrous metals like steel and iron. The standard 8mm detection distance is specified for mild steel. Detection distances for non-ferrous metals like aluminum, copper, or brass will be significantly reduced, typically by 30-60%, due to lower conductivity and permeability.

How do I wire the 3-wire PNP normally open (NO) output?

Connect the brown wire to the positive DC supply voltage (6-36V), the blue wire to the DC common (0V), and the black wire is the PNP output. In the NO configuration, the black wire will switch to supply voltage (sourcing current) when a metal target is within range. The load (e.g., a PLC input, relay coil) connects between the black output wire and the DC common (blue wire).

What is the 'setting distance' and how is it used?

The setting distance (0-5.6mm) is a safe operating margin, typically 70% of the standard detection distance (8mm). It is the recommended maximum installation distance for a guaranteed, stable switch operation, accounting for manufacturing tolerances, temperature effects, and supply voltage variations to prevent unreliable triggering.
