Description

This sensor utilizes a grid of 32 individual force-sensitive elements arranged in a 4×8 Matrix across a compact 20mm x 10mm active area, with a 2.5mm pitch between points. Each point operates on a compression-based sensing principle, providing independent readings within a range of 20g to 5kg per point, with a trigger force as low as 20g. The flexible printed circuit (FPC) design ensures minimal added bulk and conforms to various surfaces.

The integrated UART interface simplifies digital communication, eliminating the need for complex analog signal conditioning. The cascade functionality allows multiple sensor arrays to be linked via a single serial bus, significantly reducing wiring complexity in multi-sensor systems. It is engineered for stable operation across an industrial temperature range of -20°C to +65°C, making it suitable for both controlled lab environments and demanding applications.

Key Features

  • High-Density Tactile Matrix: 32 discrete sensing points provide granular force distribution data for accurate pressure mapping.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage and how do I power this sensor?

The sensor operates at a strict 5V DC supply provided through its adapter board. Ensure your microcontroller (like an Arduino Uno) or a regulated 5V power source is connected to the board's VCC and GND pins. The UART logic levels are also 5V, so when connecting to a 3.3V device like an ESP32, a logic level converter may be required for the TX/RX lines.

How does the UART cascade support work for connecting multiple sensors?

The sensor features a dedicated cascade mode and address configuration via its onboard microcontroller. Multiple sensors can be connected in a daisy-chain fashion using the provided cable, with each assigned a unique address. This allows all sensors to communicate over a single UART port (TX/RX) on your host controller, drastically simplifying wiring in systems requiring large-area or multi-point pressure sensing.

What is the pressure range and resolution for each sensing point?

Each of the 32 sensing points has an individual measurement range from 20g (trigger force) up to 5kg. The output is a digital value transmitted via UART. The resolution is dependent on the internal ADC and firmware, providing granular enough data to discern subtle force variations across the Matrix, suitable for detailed pressure distribution mapping.

Can this flexible sensor be mounted on curved surfaces?

Yes, the ultra-thin Flexible Printed Circuit (FPC) construction is designed to conform to curved or irregular surfaces. The adhesive backing allows for secure mounting. Care should be taken during installation to avoid Sharp Microelectronics bends or creases directly over the active sensing area to prevent damage to the delicate traces and sensing elements.

Is this sensor compatible with Raspberry Pi and ESP32?

Yes, it is compatible with both Raspberry Pi and ESP32, as well as Arduino. The primary interface is digital UART. For the 5V UART logic of the sensor to safely connect to the 3.3V GPIO of Raspberry Pi or ESP32, you must use a bi-directional logic level converter on the TX and RX lines to prevent damage to the microcontroller.
