Description

The Grove TMG39931 sensor module is based on the TMG39931 IC, providing a comprehensive optical sensing solution in a single package. It utilizes an integrated IR LED and four directional photodiodes to enable proximity detection and complex gesture recognition by sensing reflected IR energy. For ambient light and color measurement, the module incorporates dedicated red, green, blue, and clear (RGBC) sensing channels, each equipped with UV and IR blocking filters and a 16-bit analog-to-digital converter.

This architecture allows for simultaneous, high-precision measurement of light intensity and chromaticity, enabling accurate calculation of illuminance and color temperature. The module is designed for reliable operation across an industrial temperature range from -30°C to 85°C, making it suitable for integration into various consumer electronics and industrial control systems.

Key Features

  • Multi-Function Optical Engine: Combines Ambient Light Sensing (ALS), Color Sensing (RGBC), Proximity Detection, and Advanced Gesture Recognition in one IC.
  • High-Fidelity Color Sensing: Four independent channels (Red, Green, Blue, Clear) with dedicated 16-bit ADCs and optical filters for precise color and lux measurement.
  • Advanced Gesture Engine: Utilizes four directional photodiodes and integrated IR LED to detect complex motions like up, down, left, right, and more.
  • Optimized for Dark Glass: High-sensitivity photodiode design allows reliable operation behind tinted or dark overlays.
  • Dual-Use Integrated LED: A single internal IR LED serves both proximity sensing and gesture detection functions.
  • Standardized Grove Connector: Simplifies wiring with a plug-and-play JST cable for rapid prototyping.
  • Wide Operating Voltage: Supports both 3.3V and 5V logic levels for broad microcontroller compatibility.
  • Industrial Temperature Rated: Operates from -30°C to 85°C for use in demanding environments.

Applications

  • Gesture-based control interfaces for smart home appliances and consumer electronics.
  • Automatic display backlight and keyboard illumination adjustment based on ambient light.
  • Color detection and sorting systems in light industrial automation.
  • Proximity sensing for touch screen disable and mechanical switch replacement in mobile devices.
  • Embedded chromaticity measurement for color temperature calibration in lighting systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the I2C address of the Grove TMG39931 sensor module?

The default I2C address for the Grove TMG39931 module is 0x39. This address is fixed and cannot be changed, allowing only one module per I2C bus unless an I2C multiplexer is used.

Can this sensor operate with both 3.3V and 5V microcontrollers?

Yes, the module is designed for dual-voltage compatibility and can be powered and communicate with both 3.3V and 5V logic systems, such as Arduino (5V), Raspberry Pi (3.3V), ESP32, and STM32 boards. Ensure your Grove base shield or cable matches the system voltage.

How does the gesture detection feature work?

Gesture detection uses the module's integrated IR LED to emit light, which is then reflected by a moving object (like a hand). Four directional photodiodes detect the pattern of reflected IR energy, and the onboard TMG39931 IC processes these signals to recognize directional motions such as up, down, left, right, and more complex gestures.

What is the maximum ambient light level this sensor can measure?

The sensor has a maximum illuminance measurement range of up to 60,000 lux (60 klx). Its 16-bit resolution per color channel allows for precise light intensity and color measurement across this broad range, suitable for both dim indoor and bright outdoor lighting conditions.
