Description

The Grove SGP30 module integrates Sensirion’s SGP30 digital metal-oxide gas sensor, featuring a temperature-controlled micro hotplate and multiple sensing elements on a single chip. This design provides two distinct, preprocessed air quality signals: Total Volatile Organic Compounds (TVOC) and carbon dioxide equivalent (COâ‚‚eq), enabling detailed monitoring of indoor air composition.

The sensor communicates via a standard I2C interface (default address 0x58) and is optimized for low-power operation. Its CMOSens® technology ensures high signal integrity and long-term stability, making it suitable for continuous monitoring applications. The module is supplied ready for integration into the Grove ecosystem, requiring only connection to an I2C port and a 3.3V or 5V power source.

Key Features

  • Multi-pixel metal-oxide gas sensor for comprehensive indoor air quality analysis.
  • Digital I2C interface with preprocessed TVOC and COâ‚‚eq output signals.
  • Excellent long-term stability and repeatability for reliable monitoring.
  • Low power consumption suitable for battery-powered IoT nodes.
  • Reflow-solderable chip module packaged on tape and reel for volume production.
  • Grove standardized connector for rapid prototyping without soldering.
  • Wide measurement ranges: TVOC 0-60000 ppb, COâ‚‚eq 400-60000 ppm.
  • On-chip temperature compensation ensures accuracy across operating conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the Grove SGP30 module?

The module is designed to operate from a 3.3V to 5V DC power supply. It is compatible with most common microcontroller development boards like Arduino (5V logic) and Raspberry Pi/ESP32 (3.3V logic) when powered correctly through the Grove system.

How do I communicate with this sensor and what is its I2C address?

The sensor communicates exclusively via the I2C serial protocol. The default 7-bit I2C address is 0x58. You will need to connect the module's Grove connector to your controller's I2C port (SCL, SDA) and use appropriate libraries to read the TVOC and COâ‚‚eq data registers.

What do the TVOC and COâ‚‚eq outputs represent?

TVOC (Total Volatile Organic Compounds) measures the concentration of a wide range of organic chemicals in the air, reported in parts-per-billion (ppb). COâ‚‚eq (Carbon Dioxide Equivalent) is a calculated value representing the equivalent COâ‚‚ concentration based on the sensor's response to various gases, reported in parts-per-million (ppm). Both are preprocessed signals from the sensor.

Does this sensor require calibration?

The SGP30 sensor features on-chip automatic baseline correction (ABC) algorithm for long-term stability. For initial use, a 12-hour burn-in period in fresh air is recommended to establish a stable baseline. The sensor outputs preprocessed values and does not require manual calibration by the user.
