Description

The LJ30A3-15-Z/AY operates on the inductive sensing principle, generating an electromagnetic field from its coil. When a metallic object enters this field, eddy currents are induced, causing a change in the oscillation amplitude within the sensor’s internal circuit. This change triggers the solid-state PNP output switch to change state, providing a reliable digital signal without physical contact.

Engineered for industrial environments, the sensor features a brass-nickel plated housing and an ABS sensing face, offering excellent resistance to mechanical impact, oil, and coolants. The integrated reverse polarity protection safeguards the electronics from wiring errors, ensuring long-term reliability in automation, material handling, and machine guarding applications.

Key Features

  • Industrial-Grade Construction: Brass-nickel plated housing and robust internal electronics ensure reliable operation in demanding factory conditions.
  • Precise Non-Contact Sensing: Accurately detects ferrous and non-ferrous metals at a nominal distance of 15mm, eliminating wear from physical contact.
  • Wide Voltage Compatibility: Supports a broad 6-36VDC range, making it suitable for various control system voltages, including standard 24VDC rails.
  • Environmental Sealing: IP65 rating protects against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction.
  • Integrated Protection: Built-in reverse connection protection prevents damage from incorrect power wiring during installation.
  • Optimized Performance-to-Cost Ratio: Delivers reliable inductive sensing performance in a durable, value-engineered package for high-volume automation.

Applications

  • Machine tool position sensing for end-of-travel limits and part presence verification.
  • Conveyor system object detection for counting, sorting, and jam prevention.
  • Robotic arm end-effector feedback for gripper open/close confirmation on metal parts.
  • Safety interlock monitoring on guards and access doors in automated assembly lines.
  • Vending machine coin detection and metal component positioning systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PNP and NPN output on this sensor?

This LJ30A3 model has a PNP (sourcing) output. In the Normally Closed (NC) configuration, the signal wire outputs the supply voltage when no target is detected. When a metal target enters the 15mm range, the output switches to 0V. PNP outputs are typically wired to PLCs with sinking digital inputs. An NPN version would have the opposite switching logic and is used with sourcing PLC inputs.

Can this sensor detect non-ferrous metals like aluminum or copper?

Yes, inductive proximity sensors can detect all conductive metals, but the effective sensing distance is reduced for non-ferrous metals compared to ferrous metals like steel. For the LJ30A3-15-Z/AY, the 15mm nominal range is specified for mild steel. For aluminum or copper, you should derate the sensing distance, typically to 40-60% of the rated value, and test in your specific application.

How do I wire this PNP NC sensor to my PLC or controller?

Connect the brown wire to your DC positive supply (6-36VDC), the blue wire to DC negative (0V/GND). The black wire is the PNP output signal. In its NC state, with no target present, the black wire will be at the supply voltage. When a metal target is detected within range, the black wire switches to 0V. Always connect the black wire to your PLC's digital input, ensuring the input is configured for a sinking (NPN) connection to read the signal correctly.

What does 'non-shielded' or 'flush-mountable' mean for installation?

Non-shielded means the sensor's electromagnetic field is not restricted laterally, allowing it to detect metal from the sides as well as the front. Therefore, during installation, you must maintain a clearance zone around the sensor body to prevent false triggering from adjacent metal structures or the mounting bracket itself. Refer to the datasheet for the required side and rear clearance distances, which are typically 1-2 times the sensor's diameter.
