Description

The LJ30A3-15-Z/BX operates on the principle of electromagnetic induction. An internal oscillator generates a high-frequency alternating magnetic field at its sensing face. When a metallic object enters this field, eddy currents are induced, causing a change in the oscillator’s amplitude. This change is detected by the internal circuitry, which triggers the solid-state NPN output switch.

Constructed with a brass-nickel plated body and an ABS plastic sensing surface, the sensor is built to withstand industrial environments, including exposure to oil, coolants, and dust. The IP65 rating guarantees protection against dust ingress and low-pressure water jets from any direction. The integrated 1.2-meter cable provides direct wiring to control panels.

Key Features

  • High-frequency inductive sensing principle for precise, wear-free metal detection.
  • NPN open-collector output (NO) with a maximum load current of 300mA for driving relays, solenoids, or PLC inputs.
  • Wide 6-36VDC operating range ensures compatibility with 12V, 24V, and 36V industrial power standards.
  • Non-shielded (unthreaded) barrel design allows for a larger lateral detection zone and side-mounting flexibility.
  • Integrated reverse polarity and short-circuit protection safeguards the sensor and connected circuitry.
  • Brass-nickel plated housing provides excellent corrosion resistance in humid or chemically aggressive settings.
  • 0-12mm recommended setting distance ensures stable operation and prevents false triggers.

Applications

  • Position verification and end-of-travel detection for metal parts on automated assembly lines.
  • Tool presence monitoring and broken tool detection in CNC machining centers and lathes.
  • Conveyor belt object counting and sorting systems for metallic components.
  • Safety interlock and door position sensing on industrial machinery and robotic cells.
  • Liquid level detection in metal tanks or reservoirs using a float with a metallic trigger.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between NPN Normally Open (NO) and Normally Closed (NC) output on this sensor?

The NPN Normally Open (NO) output means the sensor's signal wire (typically black) is internally switched to ground (0V) when a metal target is detected within range. In the absence of a target, the output is in a high-impedance (open) state. This is the standard sinking input for most PLCs. A Normally Closed (NC) output would be the opposite, providing a continuous ground signal that opens when a target is detected, often used for fail-safe circuits.

How do I wire this NPN sensor to a PLC or microcontroller?

Connect the brown wire to your positive DC supply (6-36VDC), the blue wire to the DC common (0V/GND), and the black wire (signal output) to your PLC's digital input. The PLC input must be configured as a sinking input (i.e., it provides an internal pull-up resistor to +24V). When the sensor detects metal, the black wire switches to ground (0V), completing the circuit and activating the PLC input. Always ensure your power supply voltage matches the sensor's operating range.

What does 'non-shielded' mean, and how does it affect installation?

A non-shielded (or unthreaded) sensor has its sensing coil exposed at the sides of the barrel. This allows for a larger lateral sensing field, enabling detection from the side and providing more mounting flexibility. However, it also means the sensor can be influenced by adjacent metal objects. During installation, maintain the recommended clearance distances (typically 2x the sensor diameter) from surrounding metal to prevent false triggering and ensure the specified 15mm sensing range is achieved.

Can this sensor detect all types of metals, and what is the recommended setting distance?

Yes, inductive sensors detect all conductive metals, but with varying effective ranges. Ferrous metals (like steel and iron) are detected at the full nominal range (15mm). Non-ferrous metals (like aluminum, copper, brass) have a reduced effective sensing distance, typically 30-60% of the nominal range. The recommended setting distance (the gap between the sensor face and the target) is 0-12mm for reliable operation and to account for mechanical tolerances, thermal expansion, and potential target wear.
