Description

The SparkFun Qwiic ToF Imager integrates the STMicroelectronics VL53L5CX sensor, a state-of-the-art multi-zone Time-of-Flight (ToF) device. It operates on the direct Time-of-Flight principle, emitting modulated infrared light and measuring the phase shift of the reflected signal to calculate distance for each of its 64 independent zones. This provides a detailed depth map instead of a single-point measurement.

The module includes signal conditioning and histogram-based processing onboard, which enhances measurement stability and reduces interference from sensor cover glass. Its wide 63° diagonal field of view enables broad-area monitoring. Designed for modern embedded systems, it requires a microcontroller with sufficient RAM (like ESP32 or RP2040) to load the sensor’s firmware during initialization via the I2C bus.

Key Features

  • High-resolution 8x8 multi-zone ToF sensing for detailed spatial awareness.
  • Extended 4-meter ranging capability with consistent accuracy.
  • Solderless Qwiic I2C interface enables rapid prototyping and system integration.
  • Dual-connectivity with 0.1" header pins for breadboard or direct PCB mounting.
  • Onboard histogram processing engine improves signal integrity and minimizes optical crosstalk.
  • Supports multi-object detection within its field of view for complex scene analysis.
  • Compact 24x24mm PCB footprint optimized for space-constrained designs.
  • Compatible with popular 3.3V/5V logic platforms including Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32 families.

Applications

  • Robotics and drone obstacle avoidance and navigation using real-time depth maps.
  • Gesture recognition and touchless control interfaces for human-machine interaction.
  • 3D environment mapping and SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping) for autonomous systems.
  • People counting and occupancy detection in smart building and retail analytics.
  • Proximity sensing and object dimensioning in industrial automation and logistics.

Frequently Asked Questions

What microcontrollers are compatible with this VL53L5CX ToF Imager?

The module requires a microcontroller with sufficient RAM to load the sensor's firmware during startup. It is fully compatible with platforms like the ESP32, RP2040 (Raspberry Pi Pico), RP2350, and SparkFun Artemis. Most Arduino boards with adequate memory, such as the Arduino Nano 33 BLE Sense, are also suitable. Communication is via the standard I2C protocol.

Can I use this sensor without the Qwiic connector?

Yes, the module includes standard 0.1-inch pitch header pins broken out alongside the Qwiic connector. You can solder headers to these pins for direct connection to a breadboard or for wiring to a microcontroller's I2C pins (SDA, SCL), ground, and power (2.8V to 5.5V). The Qwiic system is optional for solderless daisy-chaining.

What is the difference between 4x4 and 8x8 zone resolution modes?

The VL53L5CX sensor can be configured for either 4x4 (16 zones) or 8x8 (64 zones) resolution. The 8x8 mode provides a higher density of distance data points for more detailed spatial mapping, while the 4x4 mode offers faster update rates and lower computational overhead. The choice depends on your application's need for detail versus speed.

What is the purpose of the histogram processing feature?

The onboard histogram processing is a signal analysis technique that helps distinguish the true return signal from background noise and optical crosstalk, particularly from the sensor's protective cover glass. This results in more reliable and stable distance measurements, especially in challenging lighting conditions or with transparent/reflective targets.
