Description

The Arducam Time of Flight (ToF) Camera utilizes a continuous-wave (CW) modulation method, emitting 940nm light and calculating distance based on the time-of-flight principle (d=C/2f). This enables the capture of per-pixel depth data (X, Y, Z coordinates), transforming 2D imaging into actionable 3D spatial information. The module is engineered for integration with Raspberry Pi single-board computers, providing a streamlined solution for edge-based computer vision tasks.

With a maximum sensor frame rate of 120 fps and configurable modulation frequencies of 75MHz or 37.5MHz, the camera offers flexibility for balancing precision and speed. Its compact form factor and MIPI interface make it suitable for embedded systems where size and data throughput are critical, such as in drone-based inspection, obstacle avoidance, or automated guided vehicle (AGV) navigation payloads.

Key Features

  • Depth Sensing Core: Employs Time-of-Flight technology with a 940nm VCSEL illuminator for accurate distance measurement up to 4 meters.
  • High-Speed Data Output: Supports a sensor frame rate up to 120 fps, with real-time processing delivering 30 fps depth streams on Raspberry Pi 4.
  • Dual Measurement Modes: Configurable for Near Mode (2m) and Far Mode (4m) operation to suit varying range requirements.
  • Multi-Format Output: Provides simultaneous 4-phase RAW frames, processed depth frames, and grayscale amplitude frames for comprehensive scene analysis.
  • Raspberry Pi Optimized: Includes dedicated drivers and software support for Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye and later, simplifying deployment.
  • Compact & Integrated Design: Combines sensor, illuminator, and lens into a single module with a standard MIPI connector for clean system integration.

Applications

  • UAV-based inspection and mapping payloads for creating 3D models of structures or terrain.
  • Obstacle avoidance and proximity sensing systems for autonomous drone navigation.
  • Ground robotics and automated guided vehicles (AGVs) for warehouse navigation and object manipulation.
  • Research and development platforms for computer vision, SLAM (Simultaneous Localization and Mapping), and human-machine interaction.
  • Educational projects involving Raspberry Pi for learning depth sensing and 3D imaging principles.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the maximum range and field of view of this ToF camera?

The Arducam ToF Camera offers two measurement modes: a Near Mode effective up to 2 meters and a Far Mode effective up to 4 meters. It features a 70-degree diagonal field of view, providing a wide coverage area for depth mapping and object detection in applications like drone navigation or robotic sensing.

What are the power requirements and interface for this module?

The camera module itself has a typical power draw of 3.5W. It requires the host Raspberry Pi to be powered by a robust 5V/4A minimum supply to ensure stable operation. It connects via a 2-lane MIPI interface, which handles the high-speed data transfer for depth, raw, and amplitude frames.

What software and output formats does this ToF camera support?

The camera is optimized for Raspberry Pi OS Bullseye (32-bit or 64-bit) from January 2022 onward, with dedicated drivers enabling up to 30 fps depth streaming on a Pi 4 or CM4. It outputs three concurrent data formats: 4-phase RAW frames for advanced processing, processed depth frames, and grayscale amplitude frames representing signal strength.
