Frequently Asked Questions

What satellite systems does the SparkFun XA1110 GPS module support?

The SparkFun XA1110 GPS Breakout module is designed to support multiple global navigation satellite systems. It can track signals from GPS, GLONASS, QZSS, and SBAS constellations. This multi-system support significantly enhances positioning accuracy and reliability, making it suitable for demanding applications in various environments, from urban settings to remote areas.

How does the Qwiic system simplify integration of this GPS breakout?

The Qwiic Connect System simplifies integration by providing a solderless, polarized connection for I2C communication. This means you can quickly connect the GPS module to other Qwiic-enabled boards without worrying about wiring mistakes. It accelerates prototyping and ensures reliable data transfer, making it ideal for rapid development of drone or robotics projects.

Can this GPS module be used with popular flight controllers like Pixhawk or Betaflight?

Yes, the SparkFun XA1110 GPS module can be integrated with various flight controllers. Its serial communication interface is compatible with standard UART ports on Pixhawk (ArduPilot/PX4) and Betaflight-enabled flight controllers. Proper wiring and configuration in the respective flight control software (e.g., Mission Planner, QGroundControl, Betaflight Configurator) will enable precise navigation and position hold functionalities.

What is the purpose of the onboard RTC battery?

The onboard Real-Time Clock (RTC) battery in the SparkFun XA1110 GPS module serves to retain critical satellite orbit data and time information even when the main power is disconnected. This retention of data allows the module to achieve a "warm start" much faster than a "cold start," as it doesn't need to re-acquire all satellite ephemeris data from scratch.

What type of antenna is recommended for the SparkFun XA1110 GPS Breakout?

The SparkFun XA1110 GPS Breakout features a U.FL connector, which allows for the attachment of an external active GPS antenna. While a simple passive patch antenna might suffice for some uses, an active antenna with a built-in LNA (Low Noise Amplifier) is generally recommended. This enhances signal reception, improving accuracy and reliability, particularly in challenging environments.
