Description

This development board serves as a dedicated sensor node, combining the processing and wireless capabilities of the popular ESP8266 (via an external ESP-01/ESP-01S module) with a local DHT11 temperature and humidity sensor. It is engineered for low-power, remote monitoring applications where environmental data needs to be collected and transmitted to a cloud server or local network via Wi-Fi.

The board features a straightforward power design accepting a wide 3.7V to 12V DC input, making it compatible with single-cell Li-ion batteries or standard wall adapters. The integrated 2.54mm pin headers provide easy access to the ESP-01S module’s UART, GPIO, and power pins for programming and expansion, while the onboard DHT11 sensor offers a simple digital interface for reliable environmental readings.

Key Features

  • Designed for use with external ESP8266 ESP-01 or ESP-01S Wi-Fi modules.
  • Onboard DHT11 digital sensor provides temperature and humidity measurements.
  • Broad DC input voltage range (3.7V-12V) for flexible power sourcing.
  • Standard 2.54mm pin headers for easy module insertion and external connections.
  • Compact form factor suitable for embedded deployment in enclosures.
  • Ideal platform for learning IoT principles and developing remote monitoring solutions.

Applications

  • Smart home temperature and humidity monitoring nodes.
  • IoT environmental data loggers for greenhouses or storage facilities.
  • Educational projects for learning wireless sensor network basics.
  • Prototyping remote asset condition monitoring systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this board include the ESP-01S Wi-Fi module?

No, this board is a carrier PCB for the sensor and power regulation. You must provide and insert your own ESP8266 ESP-01 or ESP-01S Wi-Fi module into the onboard 2x4 pin female header. The module is responsible for all wireless connectivity and microcontroller functions.

How do I program the ESP-01S module for this board?

You need to program the ESP-01S module separately before inserting it. Use a USB-to-Serial adapter connected to the module's TX, RX, GPIO0, and RST pins. Set GPIO0 low to enter flash mode, then upload your Arduino IDE or AT command firmware. After programming, insert the module into the board's header with the correct orientation.

What is the power supply requirement and how do I connect it?

The board accepts 3.7V to 12V DC input. Connect the positive wire to the VCC pin and the negative to the GND pin on the 2.54mm header. A 3.7V Li-ion battery is suitable for portable use. Ensure your external ESP-01S module receives a stable 3.3V from its own regulator, as the board does not provide 3.3V power.

Can I use sensors other than the onboard DHT11?

Yes, the board breaks out the ESP-01S GPIO pins. You can disconnect the DHT11 or use other GPIOs to connect additional I2C, SPI, or digital sensors like a BME280. Modify your firmware to read from the new sensor's data pin and ensure proper pull-up resistors if required by the sensor.
