Description

The Grove Doppler Radar leverages a 24GHz Silicon Germanium MMIC (BGT24LTR11) paired with an XMC1302 Arm Cortex-M0 microcontroller to deliver advanced motion sensing capabilities. Unlike traditional PIR or ultrasonic sensors, it uses continuous-wave Doppler radar to detect not only presence but also the radial velocity and angle of moving objects with high precision. The electromagnetic signal penetrates non-metallic materials, enabling concealed installation for security and automation systems.

This module outputs processed data via a UART interface at 115200 baud, providing object detection, speed, and directional information with a 300ms update rate. Its compact, low-power design is engineered for reliability in industrial robotics, smart building access control, and UAV applications, maintaining stable operation across a wide temperature range and adverse weather conditions.

Key Features

  • 24GHz radar transceiver (BGT24LTR11) enables high-precision motion, velocity, and angle detection.
  • Integrated Arm Cortex-M0 (XMC1302) handles signal processing and communicates via UART.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the Grove Doppler Radar?

The module operates from 3.3V to 5V DC, making it directly compatible with most microcontroller boards like Arduino (5V) and Raspberry Pi (3.3V). The maximum input voltage should not exceed 5.5V to prevent damage to the onboard circuitry.

How does this radar sensor communicate with a microcontroller?

It communicates via a UART serial interface at a fixed baud rate of 115200. Processed data packets containing motion status, velocity, and angle information are sent from the module's integrated Arm Cortex-M0 MCU. Connect the module's TX/RX pins to your controller's UART pins.

Can this sensor detect motion through walls or enclosures?

Yes, the 24GHz radar signal can penetrate non-metallic materials like plastic, drywall, and glass. This allows for concealed installation behind enclosures, making it ideal for discreet security systems, automatic doors, and embedded applications where aesthetics or protection are important.

What is the difference between this radar module and a standard PIR motion sensor?

Unlike PIR sensors which detect infrared heat changes, this Doppler radar detects motion based on frequency shifts in reflected microwave signals. It provides additional data such as radial velocity and can detect slower movements. It is also less affected by ambient temperature and works effectively in harsh weather conditions like rain or dust.
