Description

The Raspberry Pi Global Shutter Camera is a specialized 1.6-megapixel imaging solution designed to capture rapid motion without the typical artifacts associated with rolling shutter cameras. This makes it ideally suited for high-speed photography and critical machine vision applications, where even minor distortion can severely impact inference performance and data accuracy. Its global shutter mechanism ensures that all pixels are exposed simultaneously, providing a true, unwarped representation of moving subjects.

Equipped with a Sony IMX296 sensor, the camera features a large pixel size of 3.45μm × 3.45μm, which contributes to high light sensitivity. This characteristic allows for significantly shorter exposure times, down to 30μs with adequate lighting, a crucial advantage for freezing fast action. The camera shares the same C/CS-mount lens assembly as the Raspberry Pi High-Quality Camera, offering compatibility with a wide array of industrial and photographic lenses through its included C- to CS-mount adapter.

While the IMX296 sensor has a lower resolution compared to similarly sized rolling shutter sensors, this is a deliberate design choice appropriate for machine vision tasks. Lower pixel counts are often more manageable for real-time processing by embedded systems. With suitable lens magnification, the Global Shutter Camera can capture images natively optimized for machine vision models, enhancing processing efficiency and accuracy. It comes complete with a C- to CS-mount adapter, a screwdriver, a 150mm ribbon cable, and a protective back cover, ensuring broad compatibility with any Raspberry Pi computer featuring a CSI connector.
