Description

The PMSA003-A utilizes a laser scattering principle to count and size airborne particles. An internal fan draws air through the sensing chamber, where a laser illuminates particles. A photodetector measures the scattered light intensity, which is processed by an onboard microcontroller to calculate Particle concentration by size bin, outputting standardized digital data via UART.

Engineered for continuous environmental monitoring, the sensor operates reliably across a wide temperature range of -10°C to +60°C and 0-99% relative humidity. Its advanced anti-interference design, featuring six-sided electromagnetic shielding, guarantees signal integrity and measurement accuracy in demanding industrial or urban settings, making it suitable for long-term deployment in air purifiers, HVAC systems, and portable monitoring stations.

Key Features

  • Laser-based Particle counting with high 50% efficiency at 0.3 µm and 98% at ≥0.5 µm.
  • Digital UART serial output for easy integration with microcontrollers and single-board computers.
  • Wide operating voltage range of 4.5V to 5.5V DC, compatible with standard 5V logic systems.
  • Fast response time of less than 1 second for real-time air quality feedback.
  • Flexible airflow design allows customization of inlet/outlet orientation for varied enclosures.
  • Durable construction ensures consistent performance with a rated operational life exceeding 3 years.
  • Measures PM2.5 concentration effectively from 0 to 500 µg/m³, with a maximum range ≥1000 µg/m³.
  • Zero false alarm rate due to sophisticated algorithm-based detection and signal processing.

Applications

  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitors and smart home environmental control systems.
  • Integration into HVAC and air purification systems for automatic filter control.
  • Portable and stationary environmental monitoring stations for urban pollution mapping.
  • Industrial workplace safety systems monitoring for particulate matter exposure.
  • Research and educational tools for atmospheric science and aerosol studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the PMSA003-A sensor?

The PMSA003-A requires a DC supply voltage between 4.5V and 5.5V. It is designed for standard 5V logic systems commonly used with Arduino, ESP32, and Raspberry Pi (using a logic level converter). Exceeding this range may damage the sensor.

How do I communicate with the sensor and read data?

The sensor outputs data via a UART (serial) interface. You need to connect the sensor's TX pin to your microcontroller's RX pin and provide common ground. The sensor uses a specific binary data protocol; libraries and datasheets are available to parse the packet structure for PM1.0, PM2.5, and PM10 concentration values.

What Particle sizes can this sensor detect, and how accurate is it?

It detects particles in the range of 0.3 to 10 micrometers (µm). Its counting efficiency is 50% for 0.3 µm particles and increases to 98% for particles ≥0.5 µm. It provides mass concentration readings for PM2.5 within an effective range of 0-500 µg/m³, making it suitable for detailed air quality assessment.

Can this sensor operate continuously outdoors?

While it operates from -10°C to +60°C and 0-99% humidity, prolonged outdoor use requires a protective enclosure to shield it from direct rain, condensation, and extreme dust loads beyond its maximum range. Its six-sided EMI shielding helps with electrical noise, but physical protection is necessary for environmental durability.

What is the difference between active and passive output modes?

In active mode, the sensor continuously outputs data packets at a fixed interval (typically 1 second). In passive mode, the host microcontroller must send a request command to the sensor's UART to trigger a single data transmission, allowing for more controlled power management in battery-powered applications.
