Description

The KSD9700/BK05-BB1D thermal protector utilizes a bimetallic disc mechanism housed within a metallic shell. When the ambient temperature reaches the calibrated set point of 35°C, the disc snaps and mechanically opens the normally closed electrical contacts, breaking the circuit to prevent overheating. This automatic resetting occurs once the temperature drops below the reset threshold, typically a few degrees below the trip point.

Designed for direct thermal mounting, the metallic shell ensures fast response to temperature changes in the protected device. Its 10A/250V rating makes it suitable for protecting motors, transformers, solenoids, and heating elements in a wide range of 110-240V AC and DC applications, from consumer appliances to industrial control cabinets.

Key Features

  • Bimetallic Snap-Disc Actuator: Provides reliable, repeatable tripping with a Sharp Microelectronics switching action for clean circuit interruption.
  • Metallic Encapsulation: Ensures excellent thermal conductivity from the protected surface to the sensing element for accurate temperature response.
  • High-Current Switching: Rated for 10A resistive load at 250V, suitable for directly controlling significant loads or acting as a safety interlock.
  • Automatic Reset: Contacts re-close automatically once the temperature cools sufficiently, allowing for unattended operation.
  • Pre-Wired Leads: Includes 7cm insulated lead wires terminated for quick solder or screw terminal connection.
  • Compact & Mountable: Small footprint (approx. 9 x 7 x 1 cm) allows for installation in space-constrained environments.

Applications

  • Over-temperature cut-off safety for AC/DC power supplies and battery chargers.
  • Thermal protection for small motors, fans, pumps, and solenoids in appliances and HVAC equipment.
  • Temperature limiting in heating elements, coffee makers, soldering irons, and other thermal tools.
  • Safety interlock in industrial control panels, transformer enclosures, and power distribution units.
  • Preventive thermal management in audio amplifiers, power inverters, and telecommunications equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the trip accuracy and reset differential for this KSD9700 thermal switch?

The trip temperature is typically calibrated to 35°C with a tolerance of ±3-5°C. The reset differential, the temperature drop required for the contacts to re-close, is usually 5-10°C below the trip point. This hysteresis prevents rapid cycling near the set point.

Can this switch be used with both AC and DC voltages up to 250V?

Yes, the switch is rated for 250V AC/DC. The 10A current rating applies to both AC and DC resistive loads. For inductive loads (motors, solenoids), derating may be necessary to account for inrush currents and arcing during contact opening.

How should I mount the thermal switch for proper operation?

For accurate sensing, the metallic body of the switch must be in direct, firm thermal contact with the surface or component you wish to protect. Use thermal adhesive, a mounting clip, or a screw to ensure good heat transfer. Avoid insulating the metal shell, as this will delay the response.

Is the 7cm wire length sufficient, and what is the wire gauge?

The included 7cm pre-attached leads are suitable for direct connection to nearby terminals. The wire gauge is typically AWG 20-22, sufficient for the 10A rating over this short distance. For longer runs, you can splice in heavier gauge wire as needed.
