Description

The DFRobot Gravity SCD41 CO2 Sensor leverages Sensirion’s advanced photoacoustic NDIR (Non-Dispersive Infrared) sensing principle. An infrared emitter pulses light, which is absorbed by CO2 molecules within the sealed measurement chamber, creating a pressure wave proportional to the gas concentration. A built-in microphone detects this acoustic signal, while integrated CMOSens® technology provides precise signal processing and compensation using concurrent temperature and humidity data.

This sensor module is engineered for long-term stability and minimal drift, making it suitable for continuous monitoring applications. Its low power profile and wide 3.3V to 5V supply voltage range ensure compatibility with battery-powered and mains-operated systems alike, from smart home devices to industrial HVAC controls.

Key Features

  • Triple-output sensor providing CO2 concentration, ambient temperature, and relative humidity.
  • Based on Sensirion's SCD41 chipset, offering high accuracy and reliability in a miniature package.
  • Photoacoustic NDIR sensing principle ensures stable performance with low cross-sensitivity.
  • On-chip temperature and humidity compensation for enhanced CO2 measurement accuracy.
  • Ultra-compact and lightweight design for easy integration into existing enclosures and systems.
  • Low average operating current (<4mA) enables energy-efficient, always-on monitoring.
  • Standard I2C digital interface (address 0x62) simplifies communication with most microcontrollers.
  • Supplied with a Gravity-4P I2C/UART cable for immediate plug-and-play operation with DFRobot ecosystem boards.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the SCD41 sensor module?

The module operates from 3.3V to 5V DC, making it directly compatible with most common microcontroller platforms like Arduino (5V), Raspberry Pi (3.3V), ESP32 (3.3V), and STM32 boards without requiring a level shifter.

How do I connect and communicate with this sensor?

The sensor uses a standard I2C interface with a fixed address of 0x62. Connect the module's Gravity connector to your controller using the supplied 4-pin cable, linking SDA, SCL, VCC, and GND pins. You can then use the Sensirion or DFRobot-provided libraries to read CO2, temperature, and humidity data.

Does the sensor require calibration?

The SCD41 sensor is factory calibrated and features on-chip automatic self-calibration (ASC). For most applications, no user calibration is required. For the highest accuracy in stable environments, you can perform a forced recalibration (FRC) using a known CO2 reference gas.

What is the response time for CO2 measurements?

The sensor provides a new measurement every 5 seconds. The specified response time (for a 63% step change) is approximately 120 seconds for temperature, ensuring stable and accurate tracking of ambient CO2 level variations.

Can this sensor be used outdoors?

The sensor's operating temperature range is -10°C to +60°C, and it is rated for 0-95% RH (non-condensing). While it can function in covered outdoor environments, it is not IP-rated for waterproofing. For direct outdoor exposure, a protective enclosure is necessary to shield it from rain and condensation.
