Description

This sensor operates on a resistive sensing principle. Its two exposed probes pass a current through the soil, and the module measures the resulting resistance, which correlates inversely with moisture content. Wetter soil offers lower electrical resistance, producing a higher output voltage, while dry soil results in higher resistance and a lower voltage signal.

The sensor is constructed with an Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG) finish on the probe electrodes. This surface treatment provides excellent oxidation resistance and long-term stability in moist environments, significantly outperforming standard platings. The module includes a pre-wired Gravity 3-pin cable for immediate connection to compatible expansion shields, simplifying integration with Arduino, ESP32, Raspberry Pi, and other popular development boards.

Key Features

  • Reliable two-probe resistive measurement for direct soil moisture assessment.
  • ENIG-plated probes ensure corrosion resistance and extended operational life in damp soil.
  • Simple 3-wire interface: Analog Output (Blue), VCC (Red), and GND (Black).
  • Wide voltage compatibility supports both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller ecosystems.
  • Compact form factor (60mm x 20mm) for easy deployment in pots, planters, and garden beds.
  • Low current draw of 35mA makes it suitable for battery-powered monitoring stations.
  • Gravity connector system enables plug-and-play operation without soldering.
  • High-value build optimized for precision hobbyist and educational projects.

Applications

  • Automated drip irrigation control systems for home gardens and greenhouses.
  • Soil moisture data logging in precision agriculture and research plots.
  • Indoor plant health monitoring and smart pot watering reminders.
  • Educational kits for teaching environmental sensing and IoT agriculture concepts.
  • Integration into weather stations for comprehensive microclimate analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for this soil moisture sensor?

The sensor is designed to operate at either 3.3V or 5V DC. You can power it directly from the VCC pin of an Arduino, Raspberry Pi (3.3V), or other compatible microcontroller. Ensure your power supply can provide the required 35mA current.

How do I connect and read data from this sensor with an Arduino?

Connect the sensor's Gravity cable: Red wire to 5V, Black wire to GND, and Blue wire to an analog input pin (e.g., A0). In your Arduino sketch, use analogRead() on the designated pin. The returned value (0-1023 for a 10-bit ADC) corresponds to the 0-4.2V analog output, with higher values indicating wetter soil.

Are the sensor probes resistant to corrosion in soil?

Yes. The sensing probes feature an Electroless Nickel Immersion Gold (ENIG) plating. This gold layer provides excellent oxidation resistance, protecting the underlying nickel from the electrolytes and moisture in the soil, which significantly extends the sensor's lifespan compared to bare metal probes.

Can this sensor be used with a Raspberry Pi?

Yes, it is compatible. The sensor works at 3.3V, which matches the Raspberry Pi's GPIO logic level. You will need an analog-to-digital converter (ADC) module, such as an MCP3008, because the Raspberry Pi lacks native analog input pins. Connect the sensor's output to the ADC channel for reading.

What does the analog output voltage indicate?

The output voltage (0-4.2V) is inversely proportional to the electrical resistance between the two probes. Higher voltage indicates lower resistance, which corresponds to higher soil moisture content. Dry soil results in high resistance and a low output voltage. You must calibrate the readings for your specific soil type to map voltage to meaningful moisture percentages.
