Description

The SparkFun STTS22H breakout provides access to the STMicroelectronics STTS22H MEMS-based digital temperature sensor, a high-precision, factory-calibrated component. Its digital output eliminates the need for signal conditioning, delivering reliable temperature data directly to a host microcontroller via the I2C bus.

The sensor’s operating mode is fully user-configurable, allowing a balance between measurement frequency and power consumption. In one-shot mode, it draws a minimal 1.75µA, making it ideal for deeply embedded, battery-operated systems. The onboard address jumpers allow configuration of up to four unique I2C addresses, enabling multiple sensors on a single bus.

Key Features

  • High-Accuracy Digital Sensor: Factory-calibrated STTS22H IC provides NIST-traceable temperature measurements.
  • Ultralow Power Modes: Features one-shot and programmable ODR modes for optimized power management in portable devices.
  • Qwiic Ecosystem Compatible: Standardized 4-pin JST-SH connector enables rapid prototyping without soldering.
  • Configurable I2C Address: Four selectable addresses via solder jumpers to avoid bus conflicts.
  • Integrated Alert Function: Dedicated interrupt pin signals when user-programmable temperature thresholds are exceeded.
  • Wide Operating Range: Functions reliably from -40°C to +125°C for harsh environment applications.
  • Compact Form Factor: Standard SparkFun Qwiic board footprint for easy integration into projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the STTS22H sensor board?

The STTS22H IC itself operates from 1.5V to 3.6V. The SparkFun breakout board is designed for use with a 3.3V Qwiic cable, which is the typical and recommended supply voltage for reliable I2C communication with most microcontrollers.

How do I change the I2C address of this sensor?

The board features solder jumpers on the back labeled ADD0 and ADD1. By closing (shorting) these jumpers in different combinations, you can select one of four possible I2C addresses, allowing you to connect multiple sensors to the same I2C bus without conflicts.

Can this sensor be used in battery-powered projects?

Yes, its ultralow power consumption makes it ideal for battery-powered applications. Using the one-shot mode, where the sensor takes a single measurement and then enters a deep sleep state, reduces average current draw to just 1.75µA, significantly extending battery life.

Does the sensor require calibration?

No, the STTS22H sensor is factory-calibrated by STMicroelectronics and provides NIST-traceable accuracy, typically within ±0.5°C in the -10°C to +60°C range. No user calibration is required for most applications.

What is the function of the interrupt (INT) pin?

The interrupt pin is an active-low, open-drain output. You can program high and low temperature thresholds into the sensor's registers. The INT pin will assert (go low) when a measured temperature exceeds the high threshold or falls below the low threshold, allowing your microcontroller to take action without constantly polling the sensor.
