The APDS9960 sensor from Avago Technologies combines four distinct sensing functions into a single, compact module. Its core technology uses an integrated IR LED and four directional photodiodes to detect reflected infrared energy, enabling both proximity measurement and directional gesture recognition (up, down, left, right). The on-chip color sensing engine provides 8-bit resolution for red, green, blue, and clear light components, while the ambient light sensor (ALS) offers environmental brightness data.
Designed for seamless integration, the breakout board includes STEMMA QT connectors for solderless connections and operates over a standard I2C bus. Its configurable interrupt system allows the host microcontroller to sleep until a specific proximity or color threshold is met, optimizing power consumption in battery-powered applications. The sensor is ideal for adding sophisticated human-machine interface and environmental awareness to embedded systems.
