Frequently Asked Questions

What is the default communication interface, and how do I switch to SPI?

The module is factory-configured for the I2C interface. To switch to SPI communication, you must physically solder or bridge a specific zero-ohm resistor on the module's PCB, as indicated in the Waveshare documentation. Always ensure your microcontroller's SPI pins are correctly connected after the switch.

Is this sensor compatible with both 3.3V and 5V Arduino boards?

Yes. The module includes an onboard voltage level translator, making it directly compatible with both 3.3V and 5V logic systems like Arduino Uno (5V), Raspberry Pi (3.3V), ESP32 (3.3V), and others. Simply connect VCC to your system's 3.3V or 5V supply rail.

What is the difference between the X/Y axis and Z axis measurement ranges?

The BMM150 sensor has an anisotropic sensing design. The X and Y axes have a measurement range of ±1300 μT (microtesla), while the Z axis has an extended range of ±2500 μT. This accommodates the typical orientation of the Earth's magnetic field Vector Technics relative to the sensor package.

Does the module require calibration before use?

For basic heading detection, the sensor provides usable data out-of-the-box. However, for high-accuracy applications, performing a hard-iron and soft-iron calibration routine is recommended to compensate for local magnetic distortions caused by the PCB, enclosure, or nearby ferrous materials.
