Description

The MQ-136 gas sensor module utilizes a tin dioxide (SnO2) semiconductor sensing layer. In clean air, the conductivity of the sensor is low. When exposed to Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gas, the conductivity increases proportionally with gas concentration. An onboard signal conditioning circuit converts this change into a usable analog voltage output and a digital TTL signal via an LM393 comparator.

Designed for reliable monitoring, the module requires a heater voltage to maintain the sensing element at its optimal operating temperature. This ensures stable performance, long service life, and a fast response to changes in H2S concentration, making it suitable for continuous monitoring applications in safety and environmental systems.

Key Features

  • High sensitivity and selectivity to Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) gas.
  • Dual-signal output interface: 0-5V analog and active-low digital TTL.
  • Onboard LM393 comparator with adjustable threshold potentiometer for digital output calibration.
  • SnO2 semiconductor sensing element ensures stable long-term operation.
  • Compact and durable PCB construction for easy prototyping and system integration.
  • Fast response and recovery times for real-time gas concentration monitoring.
  • Simple drive circuit requiring standard 5V DC supply for module logic and separate heater voltage.
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for safety and environmental monitoring projects.

Applications

  • Fixed industrial H2S leak detectors in wastewater treatment plants and refineries.
  • Portable personal safety monitors for confined space entry in oil and gas operations.
  • Environmental air quality monitoring stations for detecting hazardous gas emissions.
  • Laboratory safety systems for detecting Hydrogen Sulfide in chemical research facilities.
  • Educational demonstration kits for gas sensing principles and IoT environmental projects.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage for the MQ-136 sensor module?

The module's logic circuit operates on 5V DC. The sensor's internal heater also requires a separate 5V DC (±0.1V) supply, which can be AC or DC, to bring the SnO2 sensing element to its optimal operating temperature for accurate detection.

How do I interface the analog and digital outputs with an Arduino?

Connect the module's VCC and GND to Arduino's 5V and GND. The analog output pin connects to an Arduino analog input (e.g., A0) to read the 0-5V concentration signal. The digital TTL output pin connects to a digital input pin; it goes LOW when the gas concentration exceeds the threshold set by the onboard potentiometer.

How do I calibrate the sensor's sensitivity?

Calibration involves adjusting the blue potentiometer on the module to set the digital trigger threshold. Expose the sensor to a known concentration of H2S gas (or use a calibrated source) and adjust the pot until the digital output switches state (LED turns on) at the desired concentration level. The analog output provides a continuous voltage for more precise measurement.

What gases does the MQ-136 sensor detect besides H2S?

The MQ-136 is specifically sensitized for Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) with high selectivity. While it may show some cross-sensitivity to other combustible gases like liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas, and city gas, its primary and most reliable detection is for H2S, which is critical for safety applications.
