Description

The FlexiForce A401 sensor utilizes a piezoresistive sensing element, where applied force changes the resistance across its active area. This change in resistance can be measured using a simple voltage divider or operational amplifier circuit, converting the force into a proportional analog voltage signal. The sensor’s ultra-thin and flexible polyester substrate allows it to conform to curved surfaces and fit into tight spaces without affecting the measurement environment.

Its performance is characterized by excellent repeatability (< ±2.5%) and low hysteresis (< 4.5% of full scale), ensuring reliable measurements across multiple cycles. The nominal 0-111 N range can be dynamically modified by adjusting the circuit's drive voltage (VT) and feedback resistor (RF), enabling custom configurations from very low forces (e.g., 0-4.4 N / 0-1 lb) up to high forces (e.g., 0-31 kN / 0-7000 lb) as per application requirements.

Key Features

  • Adjustable Force Range: Dynamic range can be extended or sensitivity increased by modifying the external drive voltage (VT) and feedback resistor (RF) in the recommended op-amp circuit.
  • High-Performance Metrics: Features excellent linearity (< ±3% FS), low hysteresis (< 4.5% FS), and minimal drift (< 5% per logarithmic time scale).
  • Fast Response & Durability: Provides a rapid 5 µs response time and operates reliably across a wide -40°C to 60°C temperature range.
  • Standardized Interface: Equipped with a 2-pin connector with 2.54 mm pin spacing for easy integration into breadboards, PCBs, and test fixtures.
  • RoHS Compliant: Manufactured with RoHS-compliant materials, meeting environmental standards for electronic components.
  • Optimized Form Factor: Ultra-thin 0.203 mm thickness and flexible polyester construction enable non-intrusive installation in space-constrained designs.

Applications

  • Robotic Gripper Force Feedback: Integrating into robotic fingertips to provide precise closed-loop force control for delicate object manipulation.
  • Medical Device Pressure Mapping: Monitoring interface pressure in prosthetic sockets, orthopedic braces, or patient support surfaces.
  • Consumer Electronics Testing: Validating actuation force for buttons, keys, and touchpads during product development and quality assurance.
  • Industrial Process Control: Measuring clamping force in assembly jigs, press tools, or laminating equipment.
  • Biomechanics Research: Quantifying ground reaction forces, gait analysis, or muscle exertion in sports science and rehabilitation studies.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I adjust the force measurement range of the A401 sensor?

The A401's force range is highly adjustable via external circuitry. To extend the range for higher forces (up to ~7000 lb), reduce the drive voltage (VT) or the value of the feedback resistor (RF) in the recommended op-amp circuit. Conversely, to increase sensitivity for lower forces (down to ~1 lb), increase VT or RF. The sensor's nominal 0-111 N range is just a baseline for standard conditions.

What is the recommended interface circuit for the FlexiForce A401?

Tekscan recommends a simple op-amp-based conditioning circuit. The sensor acts as a variable resistor in one arm of a voltage divider. An op-amp configured as an inverting amplifier with a feedback resistor (RF) and a drive voltage (VT) applied to the sensor provides a stable, amplified output voltage proportional to the applied force. Detailed schematics are available in Tekscan's application notes.

What are the electrical connection specifications for the A401?

The A401 features a standard 2-pin connector with 2.54 mm (0.1 inch) pin spacing, making it compatible with common breadboards and PCB headers. The operating drive voltage (VT) should be maintained between 0.25 V and 1.25 V DC, with a maximum current of 0.2 A. Proper shielding and use of twisted-pair cables are advised for long-distance connections to minimize noise.

Can the A401 sensor be used for dynamic or impact force measurements?

Yes, the A401 is suitable for dynamic measurements due to its very fast 5 µs response time. However, for capturing high-speed impacts or vibrations, the entire signal conditioning system's bandwidth (including the op-amp and data acquisition rate) must be considered. The sensor's robust polyester construction can withstand repeated loading, but extreme peak forces beyond its electrically adjusted range should be avoided.
