Description

The BME680 sensor from Bosch Sensortec is a highly integrated environmental MEMS device. This Waveshare module provides breakout access to the sensor’s I2C and SPI digital interfaces, along with necessary pull-up resistors and a voltage level translator. The BME680 measures absolute humidity, barometric pressure, ambient temperature, and calculates an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) index based on detected volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and other gases via its integrated metal-oxide (MOX) gas sensor.

Engineered for stability and precision, the sensor features dedicated signal conditioning and compensation algorithms. The module’s compact footprint and low current consumption make it ideal for integration into space-constrained and power-sensitive designs, from IoT environmental nodes to HVAC system monitoring and wearable health trackers.

Key Features

  • Integrated Bosch BME680 MEMS sensor for comprehensive environmental parameter measurement.
  • Configurable digital interfaces: I2C (default) with cascading support and SPI for high-data-rate applications.
  • Onboard 3.3V/5V logic level translator eliminates need for external bi-directional level shifting.
  • High accuracy specifications: ±1.0°C temperature (0-65°C), ±3% relative humidity, and ±1 hPa absolute pressure accuracy.
  • Robust metal-oxide gas sensor provides VOC sensing for indoor air quality assessment.
  • Extended operating temperature range from -40°C to +85°C for harsh environment deployment.
  • Comprehensive development resources provided, including libraries and examples for Raspberry Pi, Pico, Arduino, and ESP32.
  • Compact PCB design with standard 0.1" pin headers for easy prototyping and integration.

Applications

  • Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) monitoring systems for smart buildings and HVAC control.
  • Portable environmental data loggers and weather stations for field deployment.
  • Wearable health and fitness trackers monitoring ambient conditions.
  • IoT sensor nodes for smart home automation (e.g., climate control, fan triggers).
  • Altitude tracking and weather forecasting in drones and high-altitude balloons.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the default communication interface and how do I switch to SPI?

The module defaults to I2C communication. To switch to SPI, you must pull the Chip Select (CS) pin low. The module's pinout includes dedicated SCLK, MOSI, MISO, and CS pins for SPI operation. Ensure your microcontroller's SPI peripheral is correctly configured.

How do I configure the I2C address, and what is the default?

The BME680 sensor has a configurable I2C address, typically set by the state of the SDO pin. The default address is usually 0x76 (SDO pulled low) or 0x77 (SDO pulled high). Consult the module schematic or Waveshare documentation to confirm the physical pin connection on your specific board.

Is this module directly compatible with 5V Arduino boards?

Yes. The module includes an onboard bidirectional logic level translator, making it safe to connect the I2C or SPI data lines directly to both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller GPIO pins without risk of damage to the sensitive BME680 sensor core.

What does the gas sensor actually measure?

The integrated gas sensor is a metal-oxide (MOX) type sensitive to a broad range of Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) and other reducing gases. The BME680's internal algorithms process this raw signal to output an Indoor Air Quality (IAQ) index, providing a relative measure of air cleanliness rather than a concentration of a specific gas.

What libraries are available for programming this sensor?

Bosch Sensortec provides the official BSEC software library which offers optimized algorithms for the BME680, including IAQ calculation. For quick prototyping, popular universal libraries like Adafruit_BME680 are also compatible. Waveshare supplies example code for Raspberry Pi, Raspberry Pi Pico, Arduino, and ESP32 platforms.
