Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the LSM6DSO breakout?

The breakout operates from 1.71V to 3.6V DC, making it directly compatible with 3.3V logic systems like most modern microcontrollers (Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32). It is not 5V tolerant; ensure your I2C bus voltage does not exceed 3.6V.

How do I connect this sensor to my microcontroller?

Connection is simplified via the Qwiic connector, which uses a standard I2C interface (SDA, SCL, 3.3V, GND). Simply use a Qwiic cable to connect to any other Qwiic-enabled board. For non-Qwiic systems, you can solder to the breakout's 0.1"-spaced pins.

What is the purpose of the 9kB FIFO buffer?

The large FIFO (First-In, First-Out) buffer allows the sensor to store up to 9kB of accelerometer, gyroscope, and external sensor data internally. This enables power-efficient operation by letting the host MCU sleep for longer periods and wake up to read batched data, reducing communication overhead and power consumption.

Can this sensor detect specific motions without constant MCU processing?

Yes. The LSM6DSO features a programmable Finite State Machine (FSM) and dedicated hardware logic for detecting events like tilt, significant motion, free-fall, tap/double-tap, and step counting. These events can trigger hardware interrupt pins, alerting the MCU only when necessary.

Does the module include an embedded temperature sensor?

Yes, it includes a integrated 16-bit digital temperature sensor. This can be used for environmental temperature monitoring or, more commonly, for compensating the gyroscope's readings to improve accuracy across varying operating temperatures.
