Description

The KSD302 is a bimetallic disc thermostat housed in a ceramic body. The ceramic material provides excellent electrical isolation and efficient heat transfer from the protected device to the internal snap-action switch mechanism. At the calibrated temperature of 110°C, the bimetallic disc snaps, mechanically opening the normally closed (NC) contacts to break the circuit.

This device functions as a non-resettable, one-shot thermal fuse or a self-resetting protector depending on the specific model variant. Its 10A/250V rating allows it to be wired directly in series with heating elements, motors, or transformers to provide reliable over-temperature cutoff, preventing damage from overheating in applications like coffee makers, power tools, transformers, and small industrial equipment.

Key Features

  • Precision-calibrated bimetallic snap-action switch for accurate 110°C actuation.
  • Ceramic enclosure offers high dielectric strength and superior heat resistance.
  • High-current switching capability (10A @ 250V AC/DC) for direct circuit protection.
  • Normally Closed (NC) contact design fails safe in an open-circuit state.
  • Compact, lightweight design for easy mounting in space-constrained applications.
  • Robust construction ensures long-term reliability across specified temperature cycles.

Applications

  • Over-temperature protection for AC/DC power supplies and battery chargers.
  • Thermal cutoff safety switch in small kitchen appliances (e.g., coffee makers, kettles).
  • Motor protection in power tools, fans, and pumps to prevent winding burnout.
  • Temperature monitoring and control in transformer and power distribution enclosures.
  • Heating element safety cutoff in industrial process equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the function of the Normally Closed (NC) contact in the KSD302?

The Normally Closed (NC) contact means the switch is electrically closed at temperatures below its 110°C set point, allowing current to flow. When the temperature at the sensor reaches or exceeds 110°C, the internal bimetallic disc snaps, mechanically opening the contacts to break the circuit. This provides a fail-safe over-temperature cutoff for the protected device or circuit.

Can this KSD302 switch handle both AC and DC voltages?

Yes, the specification of 250V is typically applicable to both AC and DC loads. It is rated to switch up to 10A at this voltage. For DC loads, special attention should be paid to arc suppression if inductive loads (like motors or solenoids) are being switched, as the absence of AC zero-crossing can lead to contact wear.

How do I install and wire the KSD302 thermal switch?

Installation is straightforward. The switch has two terminals. It should be mounted securely with its ceramic body in good thermal contact with the surface or component you wish to monitor (e.g., a motor housing or heatsink). Wire it in series with the load (like a heating element or motor) and the power source. Ensure wiring is rated for the 10A current. The switch will automatically open the circuit upon reaching 110°C.

Is the KSD302 a self-resetting or one-time-use thermal fuse?

The KSD302 series typically functions as a self-resetting (auto-reset) thermostat. After it trips at 110°C and opens the circuit, it will automatically close the contacts again once the temperature cools below the reset point (usually several degrees below the trip point). Always verify the specific model's reset behavior for your critical safety application.
