Description

The KSD302 is a bimetallic disc thermostat housed in a ceramic body. When the ambient temperature reaches its calibrated setpoint of 100°C, the internal bimetallic element snaps, mechanically opening the normally closed electrical contacts to interrupt the circuit. This provides a fail-safe method for overtemperature protection.

Its ceramic construction offers excellent electrical insulation and resistance to arcing, making it suitable for direct integration into mains-voltage applications. The device resets automatically once the temperature falls below the setpoint, restoring the electrical connection. This cycle provides continuous, maintenance-free thermal management.

Key Features

  • Ceramic body ensures high voltage isolation and flame retardancy
  • Precision-calibrated bimetallic snap-action mechanism for accurate trip point
  • Designed for 250V AC operation with a 10A resistive load rating
  • Normally Closed (NC) configuration ideal for safety cutoff circuits
  • Compact and lightweight design for easy integration into enclosures
  • Automatic reset function for continuous cyclic operation
  • High durability for long-term reliability in demanding environments
  • Optimized performance-to-cost ratio for basic thermal protection needs

Applications

  • Overtemperature protection in electric water heaters, coffee makers, and small appliances
  • Thermal cutoff safety for power transformers, battery chargers, and power supplies
  • Temperature control in incubators, soldering equipment, and heating pads
  • Safety interlock in industrial control cabinets and motor protection circuits
  • Preventive thermal management in lighting fixtures and ventilation systems

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the switching logic of the KSD302 thermostat?

The KSD302 is a Normally Closed (NC) switch. At room temperature, the electrical contacts are closed, allowing current to flow. When the temperature at the sensor reaches the calibrated setpoint of 100°C, the internal bimetallic disc snaps and mechanically opens the contacts, breaking the circuit to stop current flow. It automatically resets and closes the contacts once the temperature drops sufficiently below the setpoint.

What is the maximum electrical load this switch can handle?

This thermal switch is rated for 250 Volts AC and a maximum current of 10 Amps. This rating is typically for resistive loads. For inductive loads like motors or transformers, derating may be necessary to account for inrush currents and arcing. Always ensure your application's voltage and current requirements are within these limits for safe and reliable operation.

How should I mount and install this ceramic thermostat?

For accurate temperature sensing, the ceramic body of the thermostat must be in good thermal contact with the heat source or the environment you wish to monitor. Mount it securely using the provided mounting holes or an appropriate bracket. Ensure the electrical connections are tight and properly insulated, as the device operates at mains voltage (250V). Avoid subjecting the ceramic body to mechanical stress or shock during installation.

Can this thermostat be used with DC voltage or for temperature adjustment?

No. The KSD302 is specifically rated for 250V AC operation. Using it with DC voltages, especially at high currents, can cause excessive arcing and damage the contacts due to the lack of AC zero-crossing. Furthermore, this is a fixed-setpoint thermostat calibrated to trip at 100°C. The temperature setting is not user-adjustable. For different trip temperatures or DC applications, a different model must be selected.
