Description

The KSD302 is a bimetallic disc thermostat, where a temperature-sensitive metal disc snaps between two states at its calibrated setpoint. In its Normally Closed (NC) configuration, the switch remains closed, allowing current to flow, until the ambient temperature reaches 150°C. At this point, the disc deforms, mechanically opening the contacts to break the circuit, providing a fail-safe cut-off.

Constructed with a ceramic body, the switch offers excellent electrical isolation and high-temperature resistance, making it suitable for embedding in heating appliances, power supplies, motors, and other equipment requiring over-temperature protection. Its robust 16A rating allows it to switch significant loads directly without requiring an intermediate relay in many applications.

Key Features

  • Fixed Calibration: Precisely calibrated to trip at 150°C (302°F) for consistent over-temperature protection.
  • High-Power Switching: Robust contacts rated for 16A at 250V AC, enabling direct control of heating elements and motors.
  • Ceramic Construction: Provides superior electrical insulation, flame resistance, and long-term stability under thermal cycling.
  • Mechanical Reliability: Bimetallic snap-action mechanism ensures positive contact operation with no external power required.
  • Normally Closed Logic: Ideal for safety circuits where an open condition indicates a fault or excessive temperature.
  • Compact Form Factor: Small footprint for easy integration into confined spaces within appliances and control panels.

Applications

  • Over-temperature protection in coffee makers, water heaters, and electric kettles.
  • Thermal cut-off safety for power transformers, battery chargers, and power supplies.
  • Temperature limiting in soldering irons, 3D printer heated beds, and industrial heating blankets.
  • Motor winding protection in fans, pumps, and compressors.
  • Appliance safety interlock in hair dryers, space heaters, and food warmers.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does Normally Closed (NC) mean for this KSD302 switch?

Normally Closed (NC) means the switch contacts are closed, allowing current to flow, at temperatures below its 150°C setpoint. When the ambient temperature reaches 150°C, the internal bimetallic disc snaps and mechanically opens the contacts, breaking the circuit to stop current flow. This makes it ideal for safety cut-off applications.

Can I use this switch to directly control a 1500W heating element?

Yes. At 250V AC, a 1500W load draws approximately 6A (I = P/V). This switch is rated for 16A, which provides a comfortable safety margin above the 6A requirement, allowing it to directly switch such a heating element without needing an additional relay. Always ensure your operating voltage matches the 250V AC rating.

How do I wire the KSD302 thermostat into my circuit?

Wire the KSD302 in series with the load (e.g., heating element) and the power source. As a Normally Closed switch, it acts as a pass-through under normal conditions. When temperature exceeds 150°C, it opens, interrupting power to the load. Ensure connections are secure and the ceramic body is not subjected to mechanical stress.

Is the 150°C setpoint fixed or adjustable?

The setpoint is fixed at 150°C and is not user-adjustable. The KSD302 is a factory-calibrated bimetallic thermostat designed for specific over-temperature protection. For applications requiring a different trip temperature, you must select a model with the corresponding fixed setpoint (e.g., KSD301 for 110°C).
