Description

This Pro-Range incremental optical encoder utilizes an internal ASIC and a precision optical grating disk to generate 1000 pulses per revolution (PPR), resulting in 4000 counts per revolution (CPR) when the quadrature A and B phases are decoded. The NPN open-collector output stage requires external pull-up resistors (included) to interface with 3.3V or 5V logic systems, providing robust noise immunity in electrically noisy environments.

Constructed with an IP52-rated enclosure, a solid 6mm stainless steel shaft (D-type optional), and a 2-meter shielded cable, the encoder is designed for reliable long-term operation in industrial settings within an extended temperature range of -25°C to 85°C. Its high 5000 RPM rating and low current consumption make it suitable for high-speed motor feedback, conveyor belt positioning, and rotary table indexing applications.

Key Features

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between PPR and CPR for this encoder?

This encoder provides 1000 Pulses Per Revolution (PPR) on each of its two output channels (A and B). When the quadrature relationship between these two channels is decoded by a controller, it yields 4000 Counts Per Revolution (CPR), providing four times the positional resolution for higher precision motion control.

How do I interface this NPN open-collector output with an Arduino or PLC?

The NPN open-collector outputs (Phase A and B) require external pull-up resistors to your logic voltage (e.g., 5V or 3.3V). Connect the resistor between the output wire and your positive logic supply. The included 4.7kΩ resistors are suitable for this. The output will pull the line to ground (GND) when active, creating a clean digital signal for your microcontroller's input pins or PLC's high-speed counter input.

What is the purpose of the shield/drain wire in the cable?

The golden shield wire acts as a drain for electromagnetic interference (EMI). For optimal noise immunity, especially in industrial environments with motors and drives, this shield should be connected to the ground (GND) at the controller end only. This practice prevents ground loops and effectively shunts electrical noise away from the sensitive encoder signal lines, ensuring stable and accurate readings.

Can this encoder be used for speed measurement as well as position?

Yes. By measuring the frequency of pulses from either the A or B channel, you can calculate rotational speed (RPM). The encoder's high 5000 RPM maximum rating and 1000 PPR resolution allow for precise speed feedback. For bidirectional speed and position, a quadrature decoder circuit or microcontroller library is required to interpret the phase relationship between A and B.
