Description

The FlexiForce A301/1 sensor utilizes a patented piezoresistive technology where applied force changes the resistance across its 9.53mm diameter sensing area. This change in resistance can be measured via a simple op-amp conditioning circuit, translating force into a proportional analog voltage signal. Its ultra-thin, flexible polyester substrate makes it ideal for non-invasive force measurement in constrained or moving assemblies.

Engineered for high-volume OEM integration, the sensor offers stable performance with minimal drift (<5% per log time scale) and high repeatability (<±2.5%). The sensing range is user-configurable by adjusting the drive voltage (0.25-1.25 VDC) and the value of the external feedback resistor, providing design flexibility for applications from light touch to high-force detection.

Key Features

  • Piezoresistive Sensing Element: Provides a repeatable and linear resistance change proportional to applied force.
  • User-Adjustable Force Range: Dynamic range can be tailored by modifying the drive voltage and feedback resistor in the external signal conditioning circuit.
  • Fast Response & High Stability: 5-microsecond response time coupled with low hysteresis and drift ensures accurate dynamic and static measurements.
  • Durable Polyester Construction: Robust, flexible substrate withstands repeated loading and harsh environmental conditions from -40°C to 60°C.
  • Standardized Connector Interface: 2-pin male square pin connector simplifies wiring and integration into prototype or production systems.
  • RoHS Compliant: Manufactured with environmentally friendly materials, meeting international compliance standards.

Applications

  • Embedded Force Feedback in Consumer Electronics: Integrating into buttons, touchpads, or grips for pressure-sensitive control in handheld devices and wearables.
  • Test & Measurement Equipment Calibration: Serving as a precise reference sensor for validating force gauges, material testers, and robotic end-effectors.
  • Medical Device & Rehabilitation Tool Sensing: Monitoring applied force in physical therapy devices, prosthetic grip control, or surgical instrument feedback systems.
  • Industrial Process Control & Robotics: Providing tactile feedback for robotic grippers, assembly line part presence detection, and conveyor belt jam sensing.
  • OEM Product Development Kits: Prototyping and developing new products requiring accurate, thin-profile force measurement, from smart appliances to automotive controls.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I adjust the force measurement range of the A301 sensor?

The sensor's dynamic range is configured externally via your signal conditioning circuit. To measure higher forces, use a lower drive voltage (e.g., -0.5V) and a smaller feedback resistor (minimum 1kΩ). For lower force sensitivity, apply a higher drive voltage and increase the feedback resistor value. Refer to Tekscan's application notes for recommended circuit designs.

What type of output signal does this force sensor provide?

The FlexiForce A301 is a resistive sensor. It does not output a voltage directly. Its resistance decreases non-linearly with applied force. You must use an external conditioning circuit, typically an op-amp in a transimpedance (current-to-voltage) configuration, to convert the resistance change into a stable, proportional analog voltage signal readable by a microcontroller or data acquisition system.

What is the maximum operating voltage and current for the A301/1?

The recommended drive voltage range is 0.25 to 1.25 VDC. Exceeding this range can damage the sensor or lead to non-linear performance. The maximum continuous current through the sensing element should not exceed 0.2 Amps. Always use a current-limiting resistor in series with the drive voltage in your circuit design to protect the sensor.

Can this sensor be used for dynamic or impact force measurements?

Yes, the A301's very fast 5-microsecond response time makes it suitable for capturing dynamic force events and impacts. However, for accurate high-frequency measurement, your external signal conditioning circuit must also have a sufficiently high bandwidth. Its low hysteresis and drift also contribute to reliable performance in dynamic testing applications.
