Description

The VL53L1X sensor utilizes a 940nm invisible laser VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser) and a SPAD (Single-Photon Avalanche Diode) array to perform direct time-of-flight distance measurement. This method calculates distance based on the time it takes for emitted laser pulses to reflect off a target and return, providing high immunity to ambient light and target color variations compared to traditional IR or ultrasonic techniques.

The module incorporates a voltage regulator and logic-level translation circuitry, allowing it to be powered directly from 2.6V to 5.5V systems without external components. Its I2C interface operates at up to 400kHz, and the default address (0x29) can be software-configured. The integrated STEMMA QT connector system provides a plug-and-play experience for rapid prototyping with compatible development boards.

Key Features

  • High-precision laser Time-of-Flight (ToF) measurement principle.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the operating voltage range for the VL53L1X sensor?

The module has an onboard regulator and can be powered directly from 2.6V to 5.5V. Its I2C logic levels are automatically shifted, making it fully compatible with both 3.3V and 5V microcontroller systems like Arduino, Raspberry Pi, and ESP32 without requiring external level shifters.

How do I connect this sensor to my microcontroller?

For the fastest connection, use the 4-pin STEMMA QT or Qwiic JST SH connector for a solder-free I2C interface (SDA, SCL, 3.3V, GND). Alternatively, you can solder the provided header pins to access the VIN, GND, SDA, SCL, GPIO1, and XSHUT pins for direct wiring and advanced control functions.

Can I change the default I2C address (0x29)?

Yes, the I2C address is software-configurable. You can change it by pulling the XSHUT pin low to put the sensor in hardware shutdown, then initializing it with a new address via I2C commands. This allows multiple sensors to operate on the same I2C bus.

What is the field of view, and why is it important?

The sensor has a narrow 27° field of view. This focused cone minimizes detection of objects outside the intended target path, reducing false readings from background clutter and improving measurement accuracy in complex environments compared to wider-FOV sensors.

Is the laser eye-safe?

Yes, the sensor uses a Class 1 laser product with a 940nm wavelength that is invisible to the human eye. It is inherently eye-safe under all normal conditions of operation, making it suitable for consumer and industrial applications without requiring special laser safety precautions.
