The Pimoroni Cooling Fan SHIM offers a streamlined thermal management solution for your Raspberry Pi. Designed for ease of use, it utilizes a friction-fit header that simply slips onto your Pi’s GPIO pins, enabling immediate operation without the need for any soldering. This design promotes quick assembly and disassembly, making it ideal for developers and makers who frequently reconfigure their setups. The fan’s operation is fully software-controllable, allowing users to implement custom logic, such as automatically engaging the fan when the CPU reaches a specified temperature threshold, ensuring optimal performance and longevity for your single board computer.
Beyond its primary cooling function, the Fan SHIM integrates an RGB LED (APA102) and a tactile switch, both of which are fully programmable. The LED can serve as a versatile visual indicator for various system states, including fan activity, CPU load, or temperature alerts. The tactile switch provides an additional input method, enabling users to toggle the fan on/off, switch between manual and temperature-triggered modes, or implement other custom functions directly from the board. It’s important to note a few considerations for optimal use: avoid pushing directly on the fan when mounting or detaching to prevent damage, and ensure correct pin alignment to prevent harm to both the SHIM and your Raspberry Pi. This SHIM is not compatible with heatsinks. Additionally, due to its use of pin BCM18 for fan control, the Fan SHIM cannot be used simultaneously with I2S audio devices such as pHAT DAC or pHAT BEAT, which share the same pin.
