The Raspberry Pi Power over Ethernet HAT is a compact accessory designed to simplify power delivery for the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. By leveraging the 802.3af PoE standard, this HAT allows the Raspberry Pi to receive power directly through its Ethernet connection, eliminating the need for a separate power adapter. This is particularly beneficial in installations where power outlets are scarce or managing multiple power cables is cumbersome, requiring an 802.3af compliant power-sourcing equipment on the network.
This HAT connects seamlessly to both the 40-way GPIO header and the dedicated 4-pin PoE header on the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+. It incorporates a fully isolated switched-mode power supply, ensuring stable and efficient 5V output at up to 2.5A. A key feature is the pre-installed 25mm brushless fan, which is intelligently controlled via an I2C-enabled ATMEL processor. This allows the fan to activate automatically based on the Raspberry Pi’s CPU temperature, providing effective cooling only when necessary and preserving GPIO pins for other HATs.
The compact, single-sided design ensures the PoE HAT fits within the Raspberry Pi’s footprint and can even be housed within official Raspberry Pi cases. Its clever I2C fan control leaves all GPIO pins accessible, enabling users to stack additional HATs using longer pass-through headers.
